HOW TO BECOME A MOW LICENSED OPERATOR

As the only open membership, democratically operated motorcar club in the West, MOW welcomes new members and operators to the hobby and has developed a licensing and mentoring program to help new operators to learn how to maintain their cars in a safe operating condition and how to operate their motor cars safely.

The original function of motorcars did not have them running in mass and close together. Operating as a group requires a number of unique considerations and procedures to make a successful excursion. Mentoring should focus equally between the physical operation of your motorcar and operating as a group.

Below are the steps a new operator must take to become a licensed MOW operator

1. Join MOW by sending a check for $24.00 made out to MOW. Send it to Motorcar Operators West, Inc. , 705 East Bidwell St., Suite 2 Box 354, Folsom, CA 95630. Read carefully the MOW Handbook, MOW rules, and other information included in your new member packet.

2. Join NARCOA by sending a check made out to NARCOA for $24 to Joel Williams, Box 82, Greendell, NJ 07839. Read carefully the information and NARCOA rulebook included in your new membership. Visit their website @ www.narcoa.org

3. Request a NARCOA test by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope to Al McCracken, 2916 Taper Avenue, Santa Clara, CA 95051. Al will send you a NARCOA rulebook test.

4. Download the MOW Mentor Form and Agreement from the website (www.mowonline.org) or request copies by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope to Dave McClain, 22850 Placer Hills Road, Colfax, CA 95713.

5. Sign up for NARCOA insurance. This insurance is required. The costs and coverage changes annually. Please see the NARCOA website for details (www.narcoa.org)

6. Read the NARCOA rulebook carefully, take the NARCOA rulebook test, and mail it back to Al McCracken. Al will grade the test and send you a NARCOA Rulebook Certification Card, which you must have before coming to your first excursion.

7. Sign up for a MOW excursion at least 1 month before the excursion and let the Coordinator know that you are a new operator and will need to be mentored.

8. Feel free to call one of MOW’s New Member Coordinators (see the most recent issue of the Lineup) and talk about how to get yourself and your car ready for your first excursion.

9. Bring your MOW Mentor Form, MOW Agreement, NARCOA Insurance Card, NARCOA Rulebook Certification Card, NARCOA Rulebook and MOW Rules to your first MOW excursion.

10. Be mentored, have your mentor fill out your MOW mentor form, and mail it and your signed MOW Agreement to Dave McClain. Dave will then send you your MOW Operator’s License.
